return of the kawaja

there is a constant drone from the crickets and a cool evening breeze is a welcoming refreshment from the hot humid day. a few sheep walk by, slowly looking for a place to sleep for the night. the sky is clear, covered in endless constellations, shimmering through the cosmos. i am stranded in kapoeta, a town in the south east corner of sudan, a stone throw from the kenya border - but much much further to drive on the existing road conditions. we came here for a quick look at the electrification project and then the rains came and flooded the roads so we ended up staying an extra night. a cold tusker makes the delay worth it and i sit back to absorb the night sounds surrounding the outdoor dinning area.

these taken on the way to kapoeta, a couple of cliff dweller villages, nestled up in the crags of these rocks.

here is a dry wadi or river crossing, followed by what happens after a large storm event within the watershed. we see the crazy mini bus driver who tries to cross the raging stream and decide against that. within hours, the dry river crossing has turned into a raging river.

back to town for one more night - kapoeta was decimated during the war, we guess it was a target due to its logistical significance being so close to kenya. village life today goes on as normal, with the war damage all around. life has grown up around the remnants of war.
