another chapter

Back in the sudan, this time it is south sudan, soon to be an independent country.  the first week at the new job was a whirlwind, hitting the ground running, went straight into the field to see projects that are ongoing. The overall aim of the program is to support local administrations / community level governments so they have the capabilities to mitigate conflict and act as a proper governing body.  Part of this is to construct buildings from which they can work in.  Other ongoing project include airstrip improvements so access to remote areas is possible, especially during rainy season when many areas turn into swamps.

The current meeting place of community chiefs, under a mango tree.  Here we met with the community leaders, this area straddles the north south border and despite the challenges, this is the first area to reach peaceful and cooperation (early 1990s) among the various tribes and groups that live in this area. Despite the attempts of the northern government's attempts to cause them to fight each other, the tribes have been able to get along for the better good of all. They were all proud of this.

There is a definite northern/Darfur influence here - as many Darfurian traders do business in this region.

Typically dwelling in the country side.

An old train station in the "larger" city.
