african nations cup

round two of the african nations cup is set to start this evening with ghana taking on nigeria. this should be a fiercely fought match, but i think ghana will prevail for two reasons, i wasn't impressed with nigeria's play in round one and they only sneaked out of the first round, past mali, because of goal difference. ghana also possesses the coveted home field advantage which i think will help propel them into the final. i'm not sure if ghana has been holding back and waiting to really let loose in the knockout round or if they have shown their true colors already. although they topped their group, it wasn't the most convincing powerful performances i was expecting...but i have a feeling they have figured out how to win in tournament play and may have done what had to be done to win their group and advance, only to step it up, fully energized for round two. i think the only trouble might come from cameroon who is trying to convince west africa that they means business and try to reclaim the title after a 6 year drought. but my prediction is that ghana will prevail on this side of the bracket.

the other side of bracket posses some difficulties as the competition will be a lot greater. so far egypt has shown the most convincing play of all the teams i watched (they are cohesive and play really well as a team), although ivory coast has also been strong in attacking. egypt, returning as defending champions, want to proved that their 2006 victory in egypt wasn't just home field advantage but that they have what it takes to win in west africa. i predict egypt to edge past ivory coast and make it to the final - however it will be a close match. since historically field advantage has made such an impact in these games (as with most sports) i predict that ghana will take the trophy. they have just come off a world cup run and are asserting themselves as another african power house.

the only upset i can see happening is angola - with their young star striker. unfortunately they face egypt in the first game and i don't think they have the maturity to pass egypt, but if they would have faced any other team, i would have gone out on a limb and picked them to create some waves in the african soccer community.
