for all the cows

the cows with the large horns are from uganda. they are trucked up from the boarder and brought to market or sold to farmers. one male goes for about $100 US. i think the breed of cattle is watusi (ankole is another breed of cattle with the large horns) native to africa. there are two varieties of cattle in sudan: baqqara and nilotic - i'm not cow expert so i'll leave it at that.

check out the rack on that one!!

cattle theft is a big deal in sudan. there are frequent raids or attacks from different tribes within southern sudan. with limited water sources and few grazing areas, the convergence and competition heats up. additionally, the ageless struggle between the farmer (agriculturalist) and the herder (pastoralist) continues. the farmers come in to take the fertile land - land that once belonged to the nomadic herder - and of course there will be conflict. the story illustrated in the bible (cain vs able) remains to this day a clash over land for survival.
